Scam: Online Marketplace Scam – Facebook Marketplace
Paige had a close call with a scam on Facebook Marketplace while trying to sell a garden set. Shortly after listing the item, a buyer contacted her, requesting that she set up a PayPal business account. The buyer asked Paige to transfer $500 into a holding account as proof of her account’s legitimacy, promising that the money would be returned and payment made. Just as Paige was about to initiate the transfer, she had a gut feeling that something was amiss.Trusting her instincts, she decided to call her bank, discovering that she had indeed encountered a scam. By avoiding the transfer, Paige managed to save herself $1,200. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant and trusting one’s intuition when conducting transactions online.
